How to Fall in Love with the Fall on Martha’s Vineyard

While the cozy island of Martha’s Vineyard is undoubtedly a top summer destination when the tourists depart for the summer and the calendar switches from September to October, this
beautiful gem welcomes fall with balmy fall days that are packed with plenty of fun things to do without the crowds!

Speaking as a long-time Islander, we love the
fall, because we get our island back to ourselves mostly. We have more time to enjoy all the wonderful sandy beaches scattered around
the island.

During the off-season you can visit all beaches that are not available during the summer; Lambert’s Cove Beach, Lucy Vincent Beach for example. The ocean water is cool, but still very enjoyable. Bring your bathing suit and enjoy a quick dip, take a long walk on the beach and collect all kinds of interesting shells, or just sit in your beach chair and enjoy looking at your beautiful surroundings. Many times when you visit one of the beaches in the off-season, you might be the only one on the beach, except, of course, for all the different shore birds that are racing back and forth along the shore.

Striped Bass & Blue Fish Derby starts the second Sunday of September and ends October 15. This annual fishing tourney is a bastion for community spirit -and a great time for visitors to go local with tall tales, fishing lore, and nearly 80 years of history.

West Tisbury Farmer’s Market gives you the opportunity to shop local. It is located in the Old Grange Hall, 1067 State Rd, West Tisbury. There are many small farms scattered all over Martha’s Vineyard, and many of the farmers bring their pumpkins, squashes, apples, baked goods, etc. for all of us to enjoy.
